PH & Beyond: Outreach in Gasan  Monday, May 25, 2015

I volunteered myself to a group of mountaineers who does outreach program every back to school season and every Christmas a week before I turned a year older. This year, my boyfriend, my sister, a dear friend from Bicol and I joined them in one of the islands of Tres Reyes, Gasan, Marinduque to give out school supplies and to promote the value of education.

I have been seriously involved in volunteer work back in college, so when my sister's best friend invited me, I was very excited and delightedly said yes.

Going to Marinduque wasn't that easy. We took a bus, a ferry, a jeepney and a boat to get to the community, and despite of weariness, I can 't honestly describe the feeling I had after seeing how happy the children waiting for us.

The program turned out to be more packed with fun. Children and parents had spaghetti and fried chicken for snacks and we had parlor games too with lots of prizes all for the kids. My boyfriend and I played the sock race with them and we won. Mel and I can make a good team! It was indeed a fun-filled day of sharing. Meeting this beautiful community gave me a new sense of purpose and perhaps even a new outlook in life.

The following day, I got to talk to some of the volunteers while enjoying the sea. These people inspire me to live a productive life with healthier perspective. Normally, when it is my birthday, I would spend it pitying myself for not being the woman I wanted to be then among with the other adult issues. This year is way different, I had the chance to appreciate my life more. The the local community, the children, the volunteers, the island and the whole outreach program made me feel better inside.
